Do you have any suggestions for a practical kitchen layout?

While each client’s needs and kitchen spaces vary, certain timeless layout principles ensure both functionality and beauty. Here are our top suggestions:

The Work Triangle
Arrange the sink, refrigerator, and cooktop to form a triangle to minimise unnecessary movement. Ideally, each leg of the triangle should be between 1.2m and 2.7m for optimal efficiency.

Maximising Bench Space
Ample counter space near the cooktop and sink is essential for prep work. Adding an island bench or extending benchtops is a great way to enhance functionality.

Optimising Storage
Incorporate vertical storage solutions like tall cabinets and pull-out pantry systems. Drawers are highly practical and versatile for storing frequently used items, such as spice racks, utensils, and knives.

Planning for Traffic Flow
Maintain at least 1.2m of clearance between benchtops in high-traffic areas. Avoid placing large appliances like the refrigerator or oven directly in the main walkway to ensure smooth movement.

Creating Functional Zones
Divide the kitchen into zones for preparation, cooking, cleaning, and storage. For instance, store dishes near the dishwasher and pots near the stove to streamline tasks.

Efficient Lighting
Use a combination of task, ambient, and accent lighting to enhance the space. Under-cabinet lighting is especially helpful for improving visibility on countertops.

Practical Island Benchtop Design
If space permits, make the island bench multi-functional with storage and seating options. Ensure there’s adequate clearance around the island to support movement and workflow.

Durable Materials
Choose heat-resistant and stain-resistant benchtops, such as quartz or granite, for long-lasting performance. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides add comfort and durability.

Appliance Placement
Position the dishwasher near the sink for easy access. Install the microwave at a height that’s both safe and convenient.

Cohesive Design
Ensure the kitchen design aligns with the overall aesthetic of the property, considering its vintage and surrounding decor for a unified look.

Daily Convenience
Include thoughtful features like a breakfast bar or a dedicated coffee station to enhance everyday usability. Minimising sharp corners can reduce accidents, particularly when children are around.

What materials are best for benchtops?

Silica free mineral engineered stones and Sintered stones are the most cost-effective and low maintenance benchtop solutions.

What materials are best for cabinets and drawers?

We use HMR board, or High Moisture Resistant board.

HMR board is an engineered wood product specifically designed to resist swelling and warping caused by moisture. It is made by combining wood fibres with resin and wax that is compressed under heat and pressure. This makes it an ideal material for use in high-humidity environments like kitchens, laundries and bathrooms, offering a durable and smooth surface that can be finished with laminates, veneers, or paint.

The material’s key benefits include its excellent moisture resistance, durability, and affordability compared to solid wood. It is widely used for cupboard doors, panels, drawer construction, and base cabinets, ensuring structural stability in areas prone to spills or humidity. Additionally, HMR board is easy to maintain and meets Australian Building Standards (such as AS/NZS 1859), guaranteeing high-quality, safe, and reliable materials for use in local conditions.

While highly moisture-resistant, HMR board is not entirely waterproof and prolonged exposure to standing water may still cause damage. However, with proper care and use, it provides a long-lasting and practical solution for cabinetry in all areas of the home, combining functionality, affordability, and aesthetic flexibility to suit a range of modern designs.

What kitchen sink is best?

Choosing the best kitchen sink is a personal decision and depends on your kitchen style, functionality needs, and personal preferences. Here are some important considerations to guide your choice:

1. Material

  • Stainless steel: Durable, stain-resistant, and complements most kitchen designs, making it a versatile and cost-effective option.
  • Granite composite: Stylish and resistant to scratches, heat, and chips, ideal for modern or high-end kitchens.
  • Ceramic or porcelain: Timeless and elegant, but can chip or crack under heavy impact.
  • Cast iron with an enamel coating: A classic choice offering durability and a glossy finish, though it requires careful handling to prevent chipping.

2. Style preferences

  • Undermount sinks: Popular for a clean, seamless look, as they are installed beneath the benchtop, hiding the sink edges and making cleaning easier.
  • Top-mount (drop-in) sinks: Practical and easy to install, with the added option of larger sinks featuring built-in drainers.
  • Farmhouse sinks: Perfect for coastal or Hamptons-style kitchens, these sinks serve as a stunning focal point. However, their hard material can be tough on plates and bowls if dropped, so extra care is needed.
  • Integrated sinks: For a sleek, cohesive appearance, these sinks are made from the same material as the benchtop.

3. Size and functionality

  • Single Bowl: Ideal for compact spaces or washing large pots and pans.
  • Double Bowl: Offers multitasking capabilities, such as washing and rinsing simultaneously.
  • Triple Bowl: Provides extra functionality, especially useful for prepping and cleaning at the same time.
  • Sink Accessories: Features like drainboards, cutting boards, or colanders can enhance efficiency and usability.

How many kitchen cupboards do I need?

The number of kitchen cupboards isn’t necessarily the most critical factor — it’s about including the essential modern features that enhance functionality.

Start with must-haves like a bin drawer, pantry cabinet, cutlery drawer, and utensil drawer to create a practical and efficient kitchen. From there, you can customise the storage to suit your specific needs and lifestyle.

Tailoring storage solutions to your lifestyle and kitchen layout is key to creating a functional space.

I live in a strata property. Do I need approval before renovating?

Residents of strata properties are generally required to obtain approval from the Owners Corporation (also known as the Body Corporate) before undertaking kitchen or bathroom renovations. The necessity for approval depends on the nature of the work, which is typically classified into three categories: cosmetic, minor, and major renovations.

  • Cosmetic work: This includes superficial changes such as installing hooks, painting interior walls, or replacing curtains. These tasks usually do not require approval; however, it’s advisable to check your strata scheme’s by-laws, as additional types of work may be classified as cosmetic.
  • Minor renovations: These involve more substantial changes like kitchen renovations (e.g., installing or removing cupboards), altering internal walls, or updating recessed light fittings. Approval from the Owners Corporation is required for minor renovations, typically obtained through a simple majority vote at a strata meeting. You may need to provide detailed plans, qualifications of tradespeople, and, if applicable, acoustic certificates.
  • Major renovations: This category encompasses significant alterations affecting the structure or external appearance of the property, such as bathroom renovations involving waterproofing or removing structural walls. Major renovations require a special resolution vote at a general meeting of the Owners Corporation, meaning no more than 25% of the votes cast are against the proposal. It’s essential to consult your strata scheme’s by-laws and engage with the Owners Corporation early in the planning process to ensure compliance and avoid potential disputes.

Keep in mind that strata regulations can vary between states and individual strata schemes. Therefore, it’s crucial to review your specific by-laws and consult with your strata manager or committee before commencing any renovation work.

At Northern Beaches Kitchens, our team of licensed trades are able to undertake all work including major renovations and can assist you by supplying information needed to approach your Owners Corporation with confidence.

How can I make sure my kitchen is energy efficient?

One way to ensure your kitchen is energy-efficient is by selecting household appliances with high star energy ratings. These ratings indicate the appliance’s energy consumption, helping you choose options that save energy and reduce costs.

If your home has solar power, consider transitioning to all-electric appliances to further optimise energy use and lower your electricity bills. This approach aligns with sustainable living practices and can make your kitchen both eco-friendly and cost-effective.
