A modern kitchen design renovation in the Marquesas’ apartments at Narrabeen.

Set within the landmark Marquesas apartments on Ocean Street, Narrabeen, this kitchen renovation was shaped as much by timing as it was by design.

While the building underwent major remedial works, the owners took the opportunity to renovate. Having temporarily moved out, it was the ideal time to undertake a full kitchen transformation without further disruption to their daily life or that of their neighbours.

Positioned in one of the Northern Beaches’ most recognisable beachfront complexes, this apartment enjoys sweeping ocean views stretching from North Narrabeen pool to Long Reef and out to the horizon. The brief was clear, create a kitchen that enhances modern living while allowing the breathtaking view to remain the focal point.

Transforming the kitchen floor plan

Originally, the kitchen was partially enclosed, with a wall adjacent to the sink restricting both space and connection to the living and dining areas.

Removing this wall was a defining move, opening up the kitchen and allowing natural light to flow more freely throughout the space.

The result is a bright, open plan layout where the kitchen now integrates seamlessly with the living area, creating a cohesive environment designed around the view.

A kitchen designed for a coastal environment

Designing for a beachfront apartment comes with specific considerations, particularly exposure to salt air.

To improve longevity and reduce maintenance, the kitchen was designed without handles. Instead, sharknose cabinetry with integrated finger pulls was selected, creating a clean, architectural look defined by subtle shadow lines and minimal detailing.

Finished in Dulux Natural White, the cabinetry introduces a softer, warmer tone that complements the natural light without competing with the coastal outlook. The result is a refined, low-maintenance design that feels both modern and timeless.

Hardwearing materials for longevity.

Material selection played a key role in balancing durability with a high-end aesthetic.

The benchtops and splashback feature Smartstone in Taj Mahal, a tinted porcelain surface chosen for its exceptional performance. Highly resistant to heat, stains and chemicals, and UV stable, it is particularly well suited to this east-facing kitchen with large windows and strong natural light.

Using the same material across both the benchtop and splashback creates a seamless, uninterrupted finish that enhances the minimalist design while allowing the surrounding space and ocean outlook to take centre stage.

Seamless integration and hidden functionality

A key focus of the design was to eliminate visual clutter while maintaining a highly functional kitchen.

Appliances were integrated wherever possible, including a dedicated appliance cupboard that conceals the espresso machine, kettle and toaster. With integrated power points, these appliances can be used in place while remaining hidden behind closed doors.

The cooking zone features a Miele downdraft cooktop, with the extraction system built directly into the cooktop. This removes the need for overhead rangehoods, allowing for a clean stone splashback and uninterrupted sightlines.

A wall-mounted oven stack includes a plate warmer, standard oven and combination oven with microwave, offering versatility without compromising the streamlined aesthetic.

A Zip tap at the sink provides instant boiling and filtered chilled water, adding everyday convenience in a compact space.

A sculptural island bench

At the centre of the kitchen sits a beautifully detailed island bench, designed to be both functional and visually striking.

Softly curved edges and flexible panel detailing introduce a subtle architectural form and texture. The half-round profile adds depth and visual interest without overwhelming the clean lines of the space.

The island also incorporates a bar fridge, making it ideal for entertaining, whether it’s a quiet drink at sunset or hosting guests after a day at the beach.

Enhancing space, storage and flow

To further improve functionality, the laundry was relocated from the kitchen to the powder room, freeing up valuable space and allowing the kitchen to be fully dedicated to cooking and entertaining.

A large floor-to-ceiling pantry was introduced, providing generous storage while maintaining the streamlined aesthetic.

New engineered timber flooring in wide European Oak planks (220mm) was installed. The wider boards not only create a more premium look but also enhance the sense of space, making the apartment feel more open and expansive.

A kitchen that lets the view take centre stage

Every decision, from removing walls to integrating appliances and selecting durable materials, was made to support a clear vision. The minimalist design ensures the kitchen enhances, rather than competes with, the apartment’s most striking feature, its uninterrupted ocean view.

The result is a space that feels calm, refined and effortless, where clean lines, hidden functionality and thoughtful detailing create a seamless connection between the kitchen, the living space and the breathtaking outlook beyond.
