A coastal kitchen and laundry renovation at Whale Beach

Reconfiguring the hallway and kitchen transformed this Whale Beach coastal cottage.

Located within easy walking distance to Whale Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this classic beachside home had all the charm of a traditional coastal cottage. The goal of the renovation was to retain that relaxed coastal vibe while transforming the kitchen into a modern, functional space better suited to the homeowners.

At the same time, the laundry was completely redesigned to improve functionality, storage and layout, while maintaining a consistent design flow between the two spaces.

The original wide timber floorboards were retained and restored. These were sanded back and finished with a light whitewash and water-based satin finish. This approach protects the timber while enhancing the relaxed beach cottage aesthetic without a heavy gloss coating.

Opening up the kitchen to create a central living hub

One of the most transformative changes was removing the wall that previously separated the kitchen from the lounge room. Originally, the kitchen felt small and enclosed. By removing the adjoining wall and installing a structural beam specified by consulting engineers, we were able to safely open up the space.

This structural change allowed the kitchen island to become part of the combined living and dining area, creating a large open plan space that now flows naturally through the home.

The island bench is now the central working hub of the kitchen. We relocated the sink from beside the window to the island bench, which required redirecting the plumbing beneath the house. This created significantly more usable bench space adjacent to the oven for food preparation, while keeping the island central to family life and entertaining.

Smart storage with the addition of a walk-in pantry and mudroom

A clever aspect of the renovation involved reconfiguring the entry hallway and underutilised void adjacent to the kitchen to create a walk-in pantry and mudroom-style storage area.

Behind the kitchen, a side door previously led directly outside. This was closed off and repurposed to create a compact walk-in pantry combined with a practical mudroom. While not large enough for a full butler’s pantry, the space delivers many of the same benefits.

The pantry allows appliances to be stored out of sight and provides additional storage so the main kitchen remains uncluttered. It also offers a convenient place to store dishes while entertaining, allowing the kitchen to stay tidy until later.

The built-in mudroom features organised storage for everyday items such as coats, dog leads, umbrellas and school bags, all concealed behind closed doors. This keeps daily clutter neatly out of view from the main living area.

Coastal design details with modern functionality

The new kitchen design combines timeless coastal elements with carefully selected modern features.

Shaker-style cabinetry in Dulux Vivid White provides a fresh, classic look that suits the beachside setting. Brushed gold handles and tapware add warmth and subtle elegance.

Engineered stone benchtops in Aurum White by YDL are paired with an undermount composite white granite sink in the island, creating a clean and light palette.

As the owners enjoy cooking and entertaining, a 900mm Smeg oven with gas cooktop and electric oven was installed. A standout functional feature is the articulated wall-mounted pot filler above the cooktop. This mixer tap delivers both hot and cold water directly above the stove, allowing pots to be filled without carrying heavy water-filled cookware across the kitchen.

The splashback tiles were purposefully chosen with a softer cushion edge rather than sharp rectified edges. Their gently rounded profile creates a softer, more relaxed finish that complements the coastal design. Warm white strip lighting highlights the texture of the tiles and provides subtle evening illumination.

A small side window, the kitchen’s only external window, was intentionally retained. It brings natural light onto the workbench and provides a pleasant leafy outlook. New architraves were installed to make the window a feature and align it with the updated detailing throughout the room.

Lighting throughout the kitchen was also carefully considered. Integrated LED downlights with dimmers provide practical illumination, while pendant lights above the island add warmth and ambience, particularly with the decorative filament bulbs chosen by the homeowner.

Under-cabinet strip lighting provides additional light for cooking and food preparation, while also creating a softer glow in the evenings. This allows the homeowners to grab a snack or drink at night without turning on the main lights.

A practical laundry renovation designed for everyday living

As part of the renovation, the laundry was also completely redesigned to improve both layout and usability.

The original layout was inefficient, with no sink and limited storage. During the renovation, we recommended blocking an existing window to create a more practical L-shaped layout, which significantly improved the functionality of the space.

This allowed the washing machine and dryer to be stacked vertically, freeing up floor space and allowing for additional cabinetry and bench space.

A new sink was installed along with generous bench space for sorting and folding laundry. Storage cupboards of varying sizes were incorporated to accommodate everyday laundry essentials.

The original floor was levelled using a sand and cement screed before new tiles were installed. The area was also fully waterproofed to Australian building standards.

To maintain consistency throughout the home, a brushed gold hanging rail was installed for air drying garments, tying in with the gold finishes used in the kitchen. The cabinetry design and finishes mirror those in the kitchen, creating a cohesive aesthetic while ensuring the laundry is just as practical as it is visually appealing.
